This is Collins at her most explicitly political, and the book is stronger for it. Readers who know Haymitch only as the drunk mentor of the original trilogy will find the reframing genuinely painful - the novel's cruelty is not the arena but the aftermath. A prequel that retroactively deepens everything around it, which is the only real justification for writing one.
